Map of Croatia Pula
Pula is the largest city in Istria, located on southern tip of the Istrian peninsula. Once an Austro-Hungarian Empire major naval base. In this day and age, it is an important Croatian port and an industrial centre. The Romans built the magnificent and well-known Pula Amphitheater (arena in Croatian). Today it is the venue for summer performances for various opera, modern pop, equestrian festival, concerts and the very popular Pula Film Festival. It is sixth largest amphitheater in the world, holding up to 20,000 or more spectators.
It is the most famous and significant monument in Pula. Built in the 1st century at the same time as the Coliseum in Rome and during the period of the rule of Emperor Vespasian. In the Middle Ages, the Amphitheater was used for knights’ tournaments and fairs. It was the structure in which gladiator fights were held. If you are visiting Croatia, remember to explore the Temple of Augustus located on the north west side of the forum and the museum collection that came in to being when Marshall Marmont started collecting stone monuments in the Temple of Augustus in 1802.
